Language Tips

On this week's programme we gave you some everyday English expressions, which can be helpful in modifying or organising what you are saying. These expressions are not difficult to understand, but they are FIXED, which means they have to be learnt as whole expressions. If you incorporate then into your everyday speech you will notice that your English becomes more fluid. So here are the expressions we talked about today.

Function
It takes the conversation back to an earlier point

§ As I (you/he/she/they) say, we'll have to leave early if we want a seat.

It repeats and confirms something someone has already said

Starts a new topic but links it to the present one

§ If you ask me, she should ask for a raise.

Allows you to give your opinion, even if no-one has asked for it

§ That reminds me, I have to make an appointment for the dentist.
Function
To say that something in the conversation reminds you of something important

Expression
§ Come to think of it, I don't think he left his telephone number…
Function
When something in the conversation makes you realise that there may be a problem /query about something.
